Finishes and Warranties
Finishes
I. Standard FinishSatin aluminum achieved by rotary sanding or chemically cleaning and etching.
II. Thermoset Powder Paint Finish
Thermoset powder paint is standard for poles specified with "painted finish". Standard colors are: Dark Bronze, Black, White, and Dark Green. Special colors are virtually unlimited and are provided as specified. Thermoset powder paint finishes are resistant to scratching, chipping or peeling and have excellent color retention.
Pretreatment
Pole shafts are dry sanded without lubricant and shot blasted before the coating process. Brackets, castings and other components are cleaned in a mild basic solution, rinsed in clear water, etched in a mild acid solution, rinsed in clear water and allowed to dry thoroughly.
Finish Coat
Weather-resistant polyester or urethane thermoset powder is electrostatically applied, oven cured and bonded at approximately 400 degrees F to a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils.
Guaranteed Color Uniformity
Our standard thermoset powder coating is a minimum 1.5 mils of urethane or polyester thermoset powders. The National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers, Metal Finishes Manual, rates the outdoor life of these powders at 15 plus years.
Thermoset Powder Paint Finish Versus Anodized Finish
A color finish on aluminum poles can be obtained by either painting or anodizing. Thermoset powder coating, because of its superior qualities of color retention and surface adherence, has replaced traditional liquid painting and is now recommended over anodized finishes for a number of reasons.
Anodizing is an electro-chemical process resulting in a colored aluminum oxide layer on the pole surface. Colors are limited to clear, black and various shades of bronze. Anodizing will inherently result in color variations where there are chemical or physical differences in the same part (pole shaft) or between parts (pole shaft and base or handhole casting).
Extreme color variation occurs between the tube (Alloy 6063-T6), castings (Alloy 356) and weld metal (Alloy 4043). Minute differences in the surface properties of the tube caused by fabrication processes such as tapering will sometimes result in slight color variation of anodized finishes.
These color variations in anodized finishes are unavoidable.
Although anodizing is available, HAPCO does not utilize in-plant anodizing. Anodizers, who can physically handle pole products, will not guarantee color uniformity. Therefore, HAPCO recommends thermoset powder paint for guaranteed uniformity of color over anodized finishes.
